We all love a treat-yourself-moment every now and then. I typically only invest in the GOOD hair tools every 2 years. So when I ripped the bandaid and bought the raved about Dyson Airwrap, I had high hopes that it would replace my older tools. I wish someone was realistic with me before on why the Dyson Airwrap IS NOT worth it! I probably had too high of expectations… and believed the paid influencer hype.
Is the Dyson Airwrap worth it? My methodology was yes… It’s an ~investment~ that will essentially replace FIVE different hair tools (medium barrel, large barrel, blowout, straightener, and blow dryer). When you put it that way it sounds like a bang for your buck. Consider me convinced!!
Welp, probably 2 weeks of trial-and-error later I was disappointed. Let me start by saying the product is pretty revolutionary in the sense that there is no other hair tool like it and Dyson literally took 10 years to create it. But it is an overhyped social media dream. So, here are the reasons why the Dyson Airwrap IS NOT worth it.
- It does not hold the style no matter how many tricks, tutorials, or holding products you try.
- I’ve tried all of the high-end hairsprays, blowout balms, and even absolutely no products. I resorted to joining the Airwrap Facebook group that has 10K+ members looking for tips (and found that this is a VERY common issue and one of the most posted about topics). I even spent HOURS watching youtube tutorials to see if I was missing something… nothing worked. It’s just the reality of how it works!
- It takes significantly more time to style… Even after the learning curve.
- I’m a working woman who doesn’t have time to spend 30+ minutes on my hair every day. That’s about how much time I want to spend in total. Sure, on the weekends when I want to be extra spruced up this is fine, but it’s not ideal for your everyday routine.
- It’s bulky and takes up a shi*! ton of counter space/suitcase space
- I have pretty large counter space and double sink and the case won’t fit. It’s a gorgeous case but not at the expense of taking up the whole thing! I had to spend $70 on an organizer on Amazon to store it more efficiently…. not ideal for a product that is already $500
- You can literally accomplish the same outcome with a blowout brush + 1.5-inch curling iron (for 1/2 the price)
- If I would’ve known that the Dyson Airwrap wasn’t going to live up to the hype, I would’ve bought a GHD curling iron and a Drybar blowout brush instead. It would accomplish the same exact thing all of these attachments would do for 1/2 of the price.
- Your hair will look horrendous in a matter of hours (if not minutes)
- I was pleasantly surprised after I first did my hair – it looked so volumized and bouncy and my hair had never been done that way on my own before!! Sadly, within maybeee 30 minutes the style fell out. After trial-and-error, nothing improved or changed so I just accepted the fact that it is what it is and your hair will inevitably fall with the Airwrap.
- You need extra attachments if you have long hair
- My hair is not super long, but I’m working on growing it out. Even now my hair is a little too long and gets caught on the top of the barrels. The long barrels aren’t standard and don’t come with the Airwrap so you have to buy the separate attachments which are around $40.
My honest opinion is that Dyson has a really successful influencer marketing team who has gifted these at the expense of consumers who will buy into it. For those of us who actually have to pay for it…. Don’t waste your money. The reality is, that your hair will look great for a matter of minutes. But that’s it.
It’s not worth $500 dollars unless you’re just wanting to blow some cash. It will give you a blowout and is pretty cool, but don’t expect the style to hold or for your hair to stay voluptuous. Save 1/2 of your money by just getting a nice curling iron and blowout brush instead!
