The best books I’ve read this year (from someone who used to hate reading)

Believe it or not, I’m on track to read 30 books this year. Coming from someone who absolutely loathed reading up until 2021, that’s a huge goal for myself! Thanks to everyone’s BookTok favorite, Colleen Hoover, my love for reading began with her cult-classic It Ends With Us and I’ve never looked back since. So if you’re anything like me and don’t want to ruin the “fun” of reading with boring or shitty books, I’m sharing the best books that I’ve read this year – that are actually worth reading.

Romance

I am a romance lover through and through and have no shame!! They make you laugh, cry, scream, maybe even throw things…. but genuinely make you feel like you’re reading about people you know. Fore warning, since Colleen Hoover is my ride or die and the reason why I started to love reading, you will see a lot of her books on here.

  • Reminders of Him by Colleen Hoover – This book crushed me 😭 such a heartbreaking story with a warm and fuzzy ending to tie it all together. The amount of times my throat was closing up. I literally sobbed harder than ever from this book. Kenna and Ledger’s love story is far from expected or easy but the raw and real life moments make this book hard to put down. This is one of Colleen’s best books of all time.
  • Ugly Love by Colleen Hoover – Another heartbreaking love story that will have you laughing, crying, and wanting to punch Miles in the face. And then give him a big hug. The perfect situationship-turned-love-story between a pilot and nurse.
  • Every Summer After by Carley Fortune – I laughed, my heart raced, sometimes it truly hurt, but at every single moment I was experiencing this book as if I were there. This story goes over the mess that can come with friends turned to lovers.
  • Archer’s Voice by Mia Sheridan – ARCHER! One of my favorite book characters of all time 🥹 he’s too precious for this world. Such a sad yet heartwarming story about a woman looking to escape her past and found her person along the way. I’m smiling writing this and thinking about the book.
  • November 9th by Colleen Hoover – So many plots in this story are so unexpected. The characters meet up every year on November 9th and the twists and turns ARE INSANE. Miles and Tate from Ugly Love also make an appearance!
  • Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid – This book made me rethink Hollywood and how stars handle PR. Although it’s all fictional I really think Hollywood is as calculated as Evelyn Hugo made it out to be… Such a different story about a woman making her way through Hollywood in the 60’s and learning about who she is along the way. Major plot twist at the end!!
  • Heart Bones by Colleen Hoover – I’m not gonna lie, I am one to judge a book by its cover and almost didn’t pick this one up…. but I’m so glad I did!! This is another one of those CoHo stories that is just so real and emotional. The characters are young people on the cusp of adulthood with tough pasts and follows them as they learn how to trust and listen to their hearts. Prepare for your heart to be broken into a million pieces.
  • It Happened One Summer by Tessa Bailey – 🌶 🌶 🌶 🌶 = the spice level of this book. It is the smuttiest book, my jaw was on the floor!!! The love story is adorable because who doesn’t love a burly fisherman and uppity LA trust fund girly coming together??
  • Book Lovers by Emily Henry – Anti-lovers find eachother through their love for publishing and editing. In such a cute mountain town and the characters are so real!
  • It Starts with Us by Colleen Hoover – If you have read It Ends With Us, you HAVE to read this one. It’s the perfect ending to Lily’s story with Atlas (and good riddance to Ryle).
Thriller
  • Verity by Colleen Hoover – This book was so messed up in every way possible. It’s about a writer who has to fill in for a wife who was in an accident… Let’s just say the wife (or husband??) are bat shit crazy. You won’t be able to put this one down!!
  • Luckiest Girl Alive by Jessica Knoll – Such a real story that goes through what young people actually face today. They just released a Netflix movie on this one with Mila Kunis so I wanted to read the book version first. The book of course is way better but still worth watching!! Trigger warning **Rape and violence
Business
